The Full Story - From Field to Feeder

Born initially from the needs of local gamekeepers, Featheredge has grown into a supplier of maize-based feeds for smallholders and bird keepers alike.
Started by Dan Wormell, a farmer based in N.E Essex, UK today, Featheredge supplies not just gamekeepers and estate shoots, but a growing number of poultry owners, wild bird enthusiasts, and smallholders across the UK. What sets us apart is authenticity: the maize is grown right here on British soil — non-GM, UK-grown, and harvested with care.
We’re now one of the largest growers of grain maize in the county, and it’s that scale which allows us to offer a consistent, reliable product at a fair price.
Grain maize is a specialist crop in the UK — it’s typically planted in April or May and harvested in September or October. Due to the damp British climate, it requires substantial drying to ensure a safe, storable product. Despite these challenges, maize has become an integral part of our farming system, providing both a nutritional foundation for feed and a high-quality, UK-grown alternative to imported ingredients. All the maize used in Featheredge products is processed and milled right here on the farm, to supply whole or cracked maize, ensuring freshness, full traceability, and reduced transport miles.
From a nutritional perspective, maize offers several advantages over traditional grains. It is naturally rich in energy (starch protein and oil), making it ideal for fuelling birds during cold weather or high-activity periods. Compared to wheat or barley, maize contributes more metabolizable energy per kilo, with a lower fibre content and better palatability for many wild and game birds.
